Lewis Hamilton's New Teammate at Mercedes-AMG F1

Three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has a new partner for the 2017 F1 season. Mercedes-AMG has confirmed that Finland's Valtteri Bottas will partner the flamboyant Briton this year.

In the wake of Nico Rosberg's unexpected retirement after winning the 2016 F1 driver's championship, there was a flood of speculation about who might partner Hamilton this year. In Bottas, Mercedes-AMG has acquired the services of a dependably fast driver who is also a renowned team player.

Though that first Grand Prix win still eludes him, nine podiums are evidence of his racing pedigree. Bottas debuted for Williams at the 2013 Australian Grand Prix and has been with Sir Frank's team ever since.

His 2017 contract with Mercedes-AMG puts Bottas at the helm of a most thoroughly engineered F1 machine, a car that is clearly expected to be the fastest on the grid and give the Finn the opportunity to finally reveal his true speed – and whether he has the potential to become history's fourth Finnish F1 driver's world champ.

Per capita, Finland is the most successful motorsport nation on earth, and Bottas is the latest in a line of exceptionally fast and exceedingly brilliant Finnish F1 drivers. He should be the perfect foil to Hamilton's genius and brooding intensity, with the duo expected to utterly dominate the 2017 F1 season in their Mercedes-AMGs.

The irony is that with Bottas inheriting Rosberg's vacant seat, it's a case of one Finn replacing another. Sort of. The German anthem might have resonated when Rosberg won each of his 23 Grand Prix, but his lineage is half Finnish by virtue of his famous father, the original flying Finn and 1982 driver's world champion, Keke Rosberg.

While Bottas doesn't quite have quite Hamilton's entourage (two bulldogs) or private aviation (a Bombardier business jet), the two are almost neighbours – both reside in the Mediterranean principality of Monaco. One wonders if Lewis will perhaps offer Valtteri a seat to racing and winter testing in his 600-series jet. All will be revealed when they appear together in February to show the world team Mercedes-AMG's 2017 F1 chassis.
