What's On Jimmy Nevis's Drive Playlist

The alternative pop singer often takes the long way home, just to listen to more tunes when he’s behind the wheel.

Following the Xperia Mashlab on 5FM hit "All About It" featuring Sketchy Bongo and the collab "CONTROL-ALT-DEL" with Opposite the Other, Jimmy Nevis <jimmynevis.com> is headed for big things. And with all the work put into his successful solo albums (2012's Subliminal and 2014's The Masses) along with a wall of award-winning singles – "Heartboxing", "Elephant Shoes", "Day Dream (Last night)" to mention a few – the pop phenomenon hasn't had time to take a chilled-out road trip for ages.

"I've never done the Jo'burg-Cape Town trek," Jimmy confides. "I'd love to take my car for a proper spin down that road, with no agenda or timeframe. Stopping off the beaten track to sample new cuisine, meet locals and share in their heritage is definitely on my bucket list."

Although he is fairly universal in his music tastes, Jimmy says hip-hop is his favourite genre because of its often positive vibe. "I love listening to Jay-Z and Drakes lyrics that tell me I'm amazing. Also, Jamie Cullum is right up there as one of my staples. His album The Pursuit should be in everyone's carousel."

The solo artist says his in-car playlist is sacred. "I take the long way home from events just to listen to more music," he admits. And when it comes to a favourite passenger, he's quick to name his best friend, Janice. "She's super-cool. She doesn't fall asleep, but even better she understands car etiquette. From unwrapping bubble-gum to opening a water bottle or unwrapping a sandwich – she does it all. It's important."

And when it comes to his ultimate driving companion he lists James Corden, the British television sensation who hosts Carpool Karaoke on The Late, Late Show. "It would be a lot of fun," he says, "and the best part is I could sing the whole way!"

With shows booked right through February, the launch of his own bespoke clothing line and the promise of new music dropping soon, Jimmy has never been busier.

Catch Jimmy Nevis at the V&A Waterfront Summer Sessions, presented by smart on 3 February at 7pm.
