5 Tough 4x4 Trails to Tackle

Conquering a daunting 4x4 trail is a great way to hone your off-road driving skills while familiarising yourself with your vehicle's strengths and potential snag points. These trails are sure to kick your adrenaline levels into high gear.

1. Moegatle, North West

Highlights: Moegatle is best known for the infamous rock face Koos se Klim, a 43-degree granite rock that reaches far into the blue skies of North West province. In many ways, Koos se Klim has become a rite of passage for off-road enthusiasts. Think of it as a 4x4 check box of verified skill and confidence. You'll also love the sand track known as Klein Botswana.
Level of difficulty: 4/5
Nearest town: Britz
Distance: Varies according to route

2. Killarney 4x4, KwaZulu-Natal

Highlights: If you're looking for a well-rounded trail in the KZN region, your best bet is Killarney 4x4. Perched on the mountain slopes of Shongweni, this trail offers everything from muddy playpens to rocky climbs and challenging obstacle courses. Best of all, the trail boasts lots of water and river crossings, so you'll be able to fine-tune your water-fording skills.
Level of difficulty: Mostly 3, with parts of the trail close to 4 or 5
Nearest town: Hillcrest
Distance: Multiple routes on offer, so distances and duration vary

3. Klein Tafelberg, Western Cape

Highlights: Situated in the Sandveld region close to the West Coast, Klein Tafelberg is a diverse trail that has some of the best rock- and sand-driving tracks in the Western Cape. Unlike many other sandy trails, Klein Tafelberg's route features a series of tight turns and switchbacks, so momentum is much harder to maintain. Shortly after completing the sandy section, you'll be greeted by wide-open views and a narrow rocky track.
Level of difficulty: The sand section is mostly 3; the rocky section scores a 4
Nearest town: Piketberg
Distance: 18 km (3-5 hours)

4. Wolwekloof, Gauteng

Highlights: Just 35 km east of Pretoria, Wolwekloof is the perfect weekend getaway for any Gauteng-based off-road traveller. Expect grass-covered hilltops, boggy wetland areas and some of the best granite rock-crawling in South Africa. The first obstacle at Wolwekloof is a 300-metre stretch of clambering granite, broken rock and a series of deep axle-twisters.
Level of difficulty: 3, but optional 4s are available; could be 5 after heavy rain
Nearest town: Rayton
Distance: ± 15 km
Contact: Call 082 928 7702 / 082 334 3265

5. Mafefe 4x4 route

Highlights: Unquestionably one of SA's most beautiful 4x4 trails, although you have to negotiate an incredibly rugged stretch at the beginning. The trail is worth every chassis-knocking bump as it winds through the Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve in the far reaches of the Drakensberg Mountains. It's often vastly overgrown, so if you visit in the rainy season be sure to bring recovery gear, a panga and an insatiable thirst for adventure.
Nearest town: Motsane
Distance: ± 30 km
