A Motorsport Event You Seriously Don't Want to Miss

Discover the Afrika Burn of motorsports festivals on the plains of the Northern Cape.

It's wild, it's dusty and it's desolate. In October this year, the annual Bull Run in the Karoo moves from Vosburg to Van Wyksvlei – where car enthusiasts from all over the country will converge for a weekend of pure, unadulterated fun.

The real attraction? All cars have to be pre-1980 models and can't cost more than R25 000. Expect a timed rally around the gravel roads and a Saturday of saltpan fun with gymkhana agility events and 400-metre drag races. It's all charmingly uncompetitive, as points awarded for a car's "decorative character" ultimately decide the Bull Run winner.

Beyond the outrageous team outfits, the Bull Run remains an amateur motorsport event. And unsurprisingly, the brand of choice is Mercedes-Benz – because even if you are spending only R25 000, reliability, performance and luxury needn't be compromised.

Last year's event saw a Mercedes-Benz W126 S-Class  complete with rooflights and green Polizei door branding - a handful of highway patrol W123s, and a fantastical yellow Kalahari traffic police W114 on show. In the midst of the good-natured revelry, they all turned heads as they glided into impossibly graceful rear-wheel-drive powerslides.

Busy scouring the online classifieds for a reasonable W114 already? Good. See you there.

* The 2017 Bull Run is scheduled for 5-8 October in Van Wyksvlei, which lies some 100 km north of Carnarvon.

Keep up to date with the latest Mercedes-Benz news.
